Severus Snape is the great conundrum of the Harry Potter series: cruel to his most vulnerable students, yet respected by his colleagues; Dumbledore's confidant, healer and murderer; the only person known to have been both a Death Eater and a member of the Order of the Phoenix.

Severus Snape is a tall man with greasy black, shoulder-length hair and a hooked nose. He has an unusually unpleasant personality; however, he is an expert Occlumens and potions brewer and he held a position of considerable authority and respect under Dumbledore. Just what event in Snape's past had earned him this level of respect is unknown, but it is clear that the Headmaster had given Snape a second chance, as he has done with so many others. Snape told Dumbledore his story -- whatever that story was -- and the Headmaster believed him.
